Redeeming rewards from credit card schemes can be "awkward", according to an expert.
Donald MacLeod, head of cards of Sainsbury's Finance, stated that the process of gaining benefits from such initiatives "isn't straightforward", meaning people often feel they don't have time to use them.
However, he added that consumers who are unsure about such schemes may be "better off" going for a Nectar card.
"You save as you go and then use that money to potentially buy a flight rather than collecting the points to try and redeem against closed periods and things like that," he explained.
"Go for a more straightforward mechanism that you can redeem in store very easily [and get] money off your shopping and use the money you save to treat yourself."
Recent research by Sainsbury's Bank found that over eight million people in the UK were registered on credit card reward schemes.
However, it was also found that only three million actively redeemed offers that they have earned.
